SEAL OUT TOOTH DECAY

THE BEST PROTECTION AGAINST FUTURE DECAY.....DENTAL SEALANTS.

About 90 % of decay in school age children occurs in the pits and fissures/ groves of the chewing surface of the teeth. These surfaces trap plaque and bacteria and because it is hard to reach with a toothbrush they start decay. Untreated tooth decay can cause pain, difficulty in eating, tooth loss which in turn effects self esteem. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children and it is preventable by Dental Sealants.

DENTAL SEALANTS are plastic resin material applied in the pit and fissures of the teeth which forms a barrier between the tooth and bacteria. Sealants are very easy to apply and it only takes only a minute or so. In Georgia, an Expanded Function Dental Assistant or Dental Hygienist or a Dentist can apply a sealant. A well done Sealant can last several years and with time they get worn out and they can be replaced as needed. We advice patients not to chew ice to prevent sealants breakdown.

We advice Sealants on all age groups but we highly recommend for all children and teenagers. As you cannot outgrow decay, even adults can reap the benefits of sealants. When you visit us for an exam, the dentist examines the teeth and may suggest you a sealant if there is no decay or a filling if there is a decay. Sealants are very cost effective and almost 100% effective in preventing decay when retained.

REMEMBER... Sealants only protect the chewing surfaces but not the whole tooth from decay. So Good Oral Hygiene is very important which includes twice a day brushing, flossing and using a mouth wash. FINALLY see us regularly for examination and teeth cleaning.

GOOD NEWS FOR COFFEE DRINKERS: YOUR GUMS MAY BE HAPPY IF YOU ARE A COFFEE DRINKER !

First of all we know that coffee has Antioxidants and Antioxidants fight Gum disease. So the question is Does Coffee drinking help fight the gum disease?

Well the researchers at Boston University School of Dental Medicine( My school) explored the same question. The study authors are Dr. Nathan Ng, Dr. Raul  Garcia and Elizabeth Kaye. This study was published in the Journal of Periodontology in August 2014.

The lead author Dr. Nathan Ng says that they have found that Coffee consumption did not have an adverse effect on periodontal health but instead have protective effect against periodontal disease.

Researchers concluded that Coffee consumption was associated with a small reduction in the number of teeth with periodontal bone loss. The study group was all males, ages 26-84 at the start of the research. About 98% are non-Hispanic white males. The data was collected in the US Department of Veteran Affairs.

This is the first long term study of its kind to explore the association between Coffee drinking and Periodontal disease in Humans as per the Lead author. Researchers suggest more studies in the future with diverse study population.

But Coffee stains our teeth as our teeth have microscopic pits which can hold the food or drinks we consume. On the other side Coffee has numerous good effects on the whole body. Based on the pros and cons, We believe that it is good to drink coffee regularly but Brush and Floss Twice a Day and if needed can use a whitening tooth paste or in home or in office whitening treatment.
