Practical and Easy Tips to Cure Bad Breath

Lake Lanier Smiles, Affordable Buford Dentist

Bad breath, also known as halitosis is a serious health concern as it affects a person's physical well-being as well as cause embarrassment in social settings. While there are many causes of bad breath, there are also a number of ways on how to prevent it as well as avoid its recurrence. Listed below are simple but effective tips to cure bad breath permanently.

Maintain Proper Tongue Hygiene

A lot of people are not aware of the importance of cleaning the tongue regularly. While many do adhere to a strict brushing regimen, the tongue is usually left out, which causes bacteria build up that usually leads to bad breath and other more serious oral problems. It is good to invest in a tongue scraper and use it twice a day in order to remove harmful microorganisms that toothbrushes simply cannot handle.

Limit Your Intake of Coffee and Consumption of Heavily Spiced Food

Coffee does not only stain teeth, but it also causes chronic bad breath. Excessive intake of caffeine plus the consumption of food that contains heavy spices, i.e. curry, chillies, garam masala, cumin, coriander, etc contributes to the accumulation of bad odor in the mouth. Cutting back on coffee and spicy food is a positive step towards preventing bad breath. If you are particularly dependent on caffeine, consider switching to tea (some types of tea have just as much caffeine as coffee) or other caffeinated beverages (except soda).

Invest in an Electric Toothbrush with Timer

Brushing your teeth for two to three minutes is ideal. However, since many people are always in a hurry when cleaning their teeth, it is best to use an electric toothbrush that tells you when you have brushed sufficiently. Electric toothbrushes also saves you having to use elbow grease, not to mention prevents over vigorous brushing that can cause gum bleeding.

***If you are to use an electric toothbrush, be sure to replace the head every 1-2 months to maintain safety and effective cleaning.

Keep Hydrated

A dry mouth is basically a fertile breeding ground for bacteria that causes halitosis and other teeth/gum issues. Be sure to drink lots of water (or natural juices, but steer clear of sugared and/or carbonated ones) daily, especially after a full meal.

Consult with Your Dentist regularly

While it is perfectly acceptable to go for an oral checkup once a year, regular visits to the dentist is more ideal. Quarterly checkups would allow you to maintain healthier teeth and gums and effectively avoid bad breath. This is particularly advisable for smokers as well as those who consume copious amounts of sugar. In most cases, daily brushing alone is not enough since there are areas in the mouth that toothbrushes simply cannot reach.

A number of more serious oral diseases such as tonsil stones (which causes extreme halitosis) can be easily detected by your dentist, which allows for fast treatment. Routine procedures such as teeth cleaning and bleaching can be done regularly, allowing for better oral hygiene that most people cannot manage at home. It would also be good to ask your dentist as to which toothpaste is best for your teeth. Some people do have sensitive set of enamels that require the use of a specific type of toothpaste.

Keeping your teeth and gums clean is always paramount in order to maintain fresh breath. However, it is also quite helpful to have the guidance of a reliable dental professional if and when you need it.

WATERLOO TEETH: A 200 YEAR HISTORY

LAKE LANIER SMILES, BUFORD DENTIST

200 years ago, teeth in the dentures were acquired from dead soldiers in wars. Dentists in those days tried other sources like Bone and Ivory. But as they don't have enamel so they are weak and rotten fast. Dentists also tried porcelain teeth but they make grating noise on chewing and they appear too white and easy to break.  In 1815 the Battle of Waterloo ended with about 50,000 soldiers dead. The teeth came from these soldiers created a big supply of teeth for dentists to use in their patients dentures. That's how the name came "Waterloo teeth". It is very unfortunate but patients and dentists benefited from this teeth bonanza as at that time there is a lack of supply of the real human teeth and there was a big demand for them.

After the battle, battlefield Scavengers are very busy collecting valuables in the soldier’s uniforms but they expertise in pulling the front teeth from the dead bodies. This act is not new but the scale of this made it different. Even patients like the teeth from battlefield as they are from healthy young man than diseased corpses.

Don't worry all the teeth now a days are made from Plastic. At Lake Lanier Smiles, the dentist and lab technician will determine the size, shape and shade of teeth to make the dentures more natural and life like appearance. We don’t have different prices for economy, deluxe, premium or any other names, we just do premium dentures for affordable price.

THE MOUTH AND BODY CONNECTION:
 LAKE LANIER SMILES, BUFORD

The health of your mouth could affect the health of your body. The new research shows more evidence that there is a strong relation between the gum disease and heart disease, diabetes, stroke, respiratory disease, pre-term low birth weight babies, cancer and other conditions.
Taking care of your teeth and gums is not just to prevent bad breath or cavities but for the general good health of your body. Oral cavity shows signs of systemic diseases of the body that is gums gives important clues about our bodies.

Gum disease can be Gingivitis or Periodontitis. In Gingivitis, bacteria and plaque cause redness, tender and bleeding of gums. In Periodontitis, toxins and the chronic inflammatory response causes bone loss and gum damage. While Gingivitis is reversible, periodontitis is irreversible. Research showed that bacteria and inflammation caused by the periodontal disease linked to other conditions in the body. So by treating inflammation we can help manage periodontal diseases and manage other chronic inflammatory conditions.

WHAT CAN YOU DO…

1.    BRUSH YOUR TEETH: Twice a Day. It helps if you can brush after every meal. Brushing helps to remove food particles and plaque trapped between your teeth and gums. Also use a Tongue cleaner or brush to clean your tongue as bacteria can hide there too.

2.    FLOSS IS THE BOSS: Floss at least once a day. Floss removes the food particles and plaque in between the teeth and around gum line where your brush can’t reach.

3.    MOUTHRINSE: Swish with a mouthwash. An antimicrobial mouth rinse helps in fighting the germs missed by brushing and flossing.

4.    RISK FACTORS: If you have any of the following risk factors like age, smoking, dry mouth, diet, genetics then you are riskier to get periodontal disease. These patients might need more attention to their oral health.

5.    REGULAR DENTAL VISIT: Get a comprehensive periodontal evaluation done by your dentist regularly. Even the healthiest of patients need regular dental visit.
