Practical and Easy Tips to Cure Bad Breath

Lake Lanier Smiles, Affordable Buford Dentist

Bad breath, also known as halitosis is a serious health concern as it affects a person's physical well-being as well as cause embarrassment in social settings. While there are many causes of bad breath, there are also a number of ways on how to prevent it as well as avoid its recurrence. Listed below are simple but effective tips to cure bad breath permanently.

Maintain Proper Tongue Hygiene

A lot of people are not aware of the importance of cleaning the tongue regularly. While many do adhere to a strict brushing regimen, the tongue is usually left out, which causes bacteria build up that usually leads to bad breath and other more serious oral problems. It is good to invest in a tongue scraper and use it twice a day in order to remove harmful microorganisms that toothbrushes simply cannot handle.

Limit Your Intake of Coffee and Consumption of Heavily Spiced Food

Coffee does not only stain teeth, but it also causes chronic bad breath. Excessive intake of caffeine plus the consumption of food that contains heavy spices, i.e. curry, chillies, garam masala, cumin, coriander, etc contributes to the accumulation of bad odor in the mouth. Cutting back on coffee and spicy food is a positive step towards preventing bad breath. If you are particularly dependent on caffeine, consider switching to tea (some types of tea have just as much caffeine as coffee) or other caffeinated beverages (except soda).

Invest in an Electric Toothbrush with Timer

Brushing your teeth for two to three minutes is ideal. However, since many people are always in a hurry when cleaning their teeth, it is best to use an electric toothbrush that tells you when you have brushed sufficiently. Electric toothbrushes also saves you having to use elbow grease, not to mention prevents over vigorous brushing that can cause gum bleeding.

***If you are to use an electric toothbrush, be sure to replace the head every 1-2 months to maintain safety and effective cleaning.

Keep Hydrated

A dry mouth is basically a fertile breeding ground for bacteria that causes halitosis and other teeth/gum issues. Be sure to drink lots of water (or natural juices, but steer clear of sugared and/or carbonated ones) daily, especially after a full meal.

Consult with Your Dentist regularly

While it is perfectly acceptable to go for an oral checkup once a year, regular visits to the dentist is more ideal. Quarterly checkups would allow you to maintain healthier teeth and gums and effectively avoid bad breath. This is particularly advisable for smokers as well as those who consume copious amounts of sugar. In most cases, daily brushing alone is not enough since there are areas in the mouth that toothbrushes simply cannot reach.

A number of more serious oral diseases such as tonsil stones (which causes extreme halitosis) can be easily detected by your dentist, which allows for fast treatment. Routine procedures such as teeth cleaning and bleaching can be done regularly, allowing for better oral hygiene that most people cannot manage at home. It would also be good to ask your dentist as to which toothpaste is best for your teeth. Some people do have sensitive set of enamels that require the use of a specific type of toothpaste.

Keeping your teeth and gums clean is always paramount in order to maintain fresh breath. However, it is also quite helpful to have the guidance of a reliable dental professional if and when you need it.
